CTO won’t foot bill for Larnaca Marina

Cyprus Mail

Published on September 21, 2011

CYPRUS Tourism Organisation (CTO) head Alecos Orountiotis made it clear yesterday they do not plan on spending money now to refurbish Larnaca marina so it can go to waste when the private investor steps in.

“We will try and find a solution so if we have to spend money now it will not be wasted when the investor becomes involved,” Orountiotis said at a House Commerce Committee meeting responding to a suggestion by DIKO MP Angelos Votsis for the CTO to fund the project for the moment as part of broader negotiations with the investor.

Votsis also suggested that investors can begin the repairs before the completion of the negotiations with the government and if there is no final agreement the money can be returned.

CTO recently evicted around 150 boats from the Larnaca marina after it emerged that some of the wharfs were no longer structurally sound.

A study conducted last week by an engineer revealed that only one of the wharfs was considered dangerous and had been closed off completely. Orountiotis said that the other two are not in good shape either but are not in danger of collapsing unless there is an earthquake or unless a boat crashes into it.

Yachtsmen hope Israeli race will go ahead

By Alexis Pantelides Published on September 20, 2011

MEMBERS of the Famagusta District’s sailing club, BegaFigo, said yesterday they hoped an international sailing competition with the Israel Yacht Club will go ahead as planned next month despite the recent instability in the region.

Members of the amateur sailing club are confident that the competition will take place as planned in spite of the ongoing Turkish threats over Cyprus’ scheduled exploratory drillings for hydrocarbons which began yesterday.

“We are training and preparing as if the contest will go ahead as planned,” Aris Yiallourides, a member of BegaFigo’s Offshore Committee, said yesterday. “I do not believe that sports and politics should be connected, but obviously this is a tricky situation and no one knows what will happen.”

“We have yet to contact any governmental or public official, but it is our intention to clear matters before the competition starts,” said Adonis Kalopetrides, another member of the committee.

Kalopetrides said although the time was obviously not ideal, the race was arranged long before. “The race will only go through once the port police are consulted,” he said.

The Cyprus Israel Regatta 2011 race, will be a repeat of the same competition that was held last year in Israel. BegaFigo, which boasts around 200 members and will participate with approximately 25 yachts are looking to make this event a permanent fixture of their annual calendar.

The 185 nautical mile race will start on Sunday October 2 from Larnaca and is expected to last approximately 35 hours, finishing on Tuesday October 4 in Tel Aviv. The competition has been incorporated in Larnaca’s Cultural Week that will also see the celebration of the city’s twinning with Venice.

Yachts to be brought ashore at Larnaca marina Author: Patrick Dewhurst

THE CYPRUS Tourism Organisation (CTO) is to evict up to 150 boats from Larnaca marina after investigations revealed dangerously unstable pontoons. Acting CTO general director Lefkos Phylactides said yesterday: “We have found out through technical studies and onsite inspections that some of the wharfs – where the boats are tied – have problems relating to structural adequacy.” Phylactides said that given the possible dangers of collapsing wharfs, the CTO had no option but to close off access to the dangerous parts of the marina. Around 150 are thought to be affected, while another 150 are safely berthed. “The CTO has no option but to close access to the port until we have taken measures to rectify the situation. We are not sure what those measures will be yet, most probably (the dangerous pontoons) will be demolished.” Asked where the boats that had berthed in the Marina could go, Phylactides said: “We are making arrangements for the users to dry dock their yachts at the marina, and we are looking into various ways of alleviating the cost to owners.” As of yesterday, however, the boats remained in the Marina, and tonight the boats’ owners have scheduled a meeting to discuss the matter, after which they are expected to approach the CTO. In the next two to three days, Phylactides said, the CTO would be in a better position to announce concrete measures. “We are aware that this is upsetting but we have a responsibility to ensure the safety (of the marina’s users.)” According to Larnaca Marina manager and CTO inspector Christos Petrides the 30 year old port needs an investment of between €500,000 and €600,000 to bring it up to scratch.

Report from Cyprus Mail 12/9/2011

Larnaca outcasts could be at Zygi Marina soon.

Reading about the Larnaca Marina’s berthing problems, which may necessitate the bringing ashore of some 250 boats while repairs are put in hand to the decaying finger-berths, is very alarming, particularly for those berth-holders who may be affected. I live only a couple of miles from Zygi, and this year, accompanied by much pomp and celebration, the President of Cyprus opened the new, so-called Zygi Marina: a truly vast stone and concrete edifice thrusting out into the Mediterranean, protected by an impressive, shielding mole of natural limestone boulders and interlocking concrete blocks. It has been well over three years in the building, at what I can only imagine is an eye-watering cost – rumoured to be in excess of €15,000,000. But a marina it is not. It is a fishing haven; though it is no exaggeration to describe it as a fishing haven to end all fishing havens: a monster creation with 456 berths for only 75 fishing boats, three dinghies and one pleasure motor-boat. Even by the standards of post EU membership Cyprus, this must surely be a record in profligacy. Why could those Larnaca boat owners, who may be faced with a protracted period when their boats are lifted out and stored ashore, not be relocated at Zygi Fishing Haven while repairs are in progress at Larnaca? Under arrangements negotiated between the Cyprus Tourist Organisation for the Larnaca Marina and the management of the Zygi Fishing Haven? I admit it would not be an ideal solution: there are no electricity or water points; there are only two small locked toilets; the whole complex is unguarded. Not withstanding, if faced with a protracted period when one’s boat would be laid-up ashore there will be many, I imagine, who would be prepared to accept these shortcomings in order to retain the use of their boat.
